JACK PARKER

Jack C. Parker Passed away on January 5, 2012. He is survived by his son, Gary Parker. Jack was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on December 17, 1924. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the US Navy after 30 years of service as a Senior Gunner's Mate. Following WW II, Jack enrolled in watch maker's school and became an avid watch and clock maker. He served as a U.S. Customs Inspector for 20 years. Jack was preceded in death by his daughter Patty, and wife of 65 years, Peggy. Jack had a profound impact on many lives and he will truly be missed. Jack joined the Masonic fraternity in 1950, and was a Mason for over 61-plus years. He was a member of both Harmony Lodge No 18 and Gray Harbor Lodge No. 52. He served as the Master of Aberdeen Lodge No. 52; he served as Worshipful Master of Aberdeen Lodge No. 52 three different years. A Masonic Memorial will be held for VWB Jack C. Parker at 3:00 p.m. on January 28, 2012 at the Masonic Center, 521 North Street, Tumwater, Washington. A private interment will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery at a future date. Please come and share your memories. Light refreshments and food will be available following the Masonic Memorial.

Last night a group of us went to visit Prince Hall - Fred U Harris Lodge in Olympia. Our group consisted of WB Charles Wood & VWB Ron Singleton of Chehalis Lodge #28, WB Manley Michler, WB (and current WM) Brian Johnson, & Bro. Vic Mastro of Centralia Lodge #63, and DDGM#17 VWB John Shull.

We had a wonderful time enjoying their Fellowcraft Degree. It was a very good production. High quality work.

With one of the highest attendances of the year (40 total with 6 visitors, the rest members), Harmony Lodge #18 held their 2012 Election of Officers. The rundown from Sec. Brian Morgan is below. The LOMA meeting was held last night with Chehalis Lodge #28 being the host. Mary Craves-Holland from the Masonic Outreach Program made an presentation that filled in all the gap of information we have about the transition from Masonic Home to Masonic care inside YOUR home.

In addition, we had some mouth to ear instruction from the District Deputy conveying the GM instruction at Tri-Lodge this past Saturday concerning purging the Lodge during EAM opening and attitude of prayer.

White Apron Night at Harmony #18

This event was a new event and WB Kris Graap made a wonderful presentation. All were encouraged to wear their original White Apron. It was nice to see. The presentation took us back to the beginning when we received it during the EAM degree (and before). There was an open & interactive discussion that focused largely on Charity and what that means and how it is different to each of us. I only wish I had brought my camera for this occasion. Any Lodge that would like WB Kris to make a similar presentation for them, just contact him.

Tri-Lodge is an annual event consisting of the first three Lodges of the jurisdiction still functioning on a regular basis. The three are: Olympia #1, Steilacoom #2, and Vancouver #4. The Grand Master was in attendance as his home Lodge is Vancouver #4. Starting with breakfast at 9AM, Meeting at 10AM -- a good time was had by all. WB Ed Bennett gave a splendid presentation on the history of Local Masons in the Civil War.

Here is the gist of the message from the CA Grand Master:

There’s something very special about the craftsmen among

us. They are able to relate to our first Masonic brothers, the

stonemasons of the Middle Ages, in a unique way – through the

work they do with their hands.

Craft art is about mastery. It’s about years of training and

devotion. It’s about an act of creation, and an end product that

reflects the person and the hands that made it. I admire all of

the members featured in this issue, and the countless other craft

artisans among our fraternity, for the talent, time, and personal

investment that goes into such craftsmanship.

Their work is a reminder to all of us of the work that we must

do in the lodge, and in our everyday lives. As Masons, we have

also dedicated ourselves to a path that requires self-mastery,

and a lifetime of hard work. We are in an ongoing apprenticeship

to improve ourselves – we’re learning which weaknesses

to chip away at, and coming to understand what truly makes us

strong and balanced.

Along the way, we call upon the lessons and skills of our

stonemason brothers. They left us a blueprint for living, based

on the way they went about their craft. Stonemasonry required

leveling and squaring, balance and a strong foundation. It also

required patience, a desire to always keep learning and improving,

and commitment to excellence. These philosophies guide

us today.

So even if you don’t consider yourself a craft artisan, this

issue is about you. As Masons, we are all craftsmen. We are

all working away at our rough ashlars, year after year. It’s only

through patience, practice, and devotion that we create our own

masterpiece: the perfect ashlar of the self.

Gets the topic rolling so each Lodge can determine what (if any) direction they may wish to take to counter the impact. It was a lively meeting in Tenino, hosted by WM Steve Livingston.

One of the better Grand Master visits I have experienced. MW Mike Sanders called on each of his representatives in attendance to speak for a minute (or five) on a topic/area they are spearheading. The Grand Master's year is all about Masons helping Masons. His charity is the Masonic Outreach Services (MOS) program. WB Ken Keesler is the District #17 "Ambassador" for MOS. Masons @ Work in Tenino...

Many local Masons think that what happened at my house today is what Freemasonry is really all about. Six local Masons from the Tenino Lodge came to my house today to mow the yard and weed whack. After having been in the hospital for nine days due to intestinal surgery and then at home for a week, the yard was just gotten completely overgrown. I couldn't have done it myself.

So, from 9 to noon, the Brothers came and worked and we had a fantastic barbecue lunch on the back deck. Yummy cheeseburgers, Mexican bean salad, chips, and chocolate chip cookie bars. Special thanks to my wife, Laurel.

Robert Morris Lodge #97 in Silver Creek is a fun place to be. 24 people showed for for the Stated Meeting in the middle of summer, at least were visitors. Plans were being made for the Blueberry Festival August 6th. There were tables covered with items for sale in the dining room - a fundraiser for their Scholarship Fund. WM Clay Anderson was a superb host.

Great Success - South Sound Manor Event Center -- "Room Naming" Event

What an outstanding event put on by Betsy Borgacy, manager of the new & improved South Sound Manor Event Center. This is the newish (3 years) building next to the Olympia Lodge. They had an Open House to the general public from 1-4pm.

This was followed a 4-6pm Open House for Masons dedicated to naming each of the four meeting rooms in honor of a significant Past Master Mason. This portion turned into a premier event organized by Olympia Lodge WM Sam Lantow & attended by the Grand Master of Prince Hall of Washington. See this post for the new room names: Click here.

WB Ken Keesler has organized a work party at Diane Moulton’s house, Sunday June 26^th starting at 9:00 a.m. at 4801 20^th Ave., Lacey. Evidently the grass needs cutting, the trees trimming and the moss needs off of the roof. Ken has also organized some beauty bark so we need wheel barrows and shovels to move it around, grass trimmers and high pressure washers would be useful. Ladies are invited to help, too. Motion was made to change the Stated meeting night to the 4th Monday of each month. This is a By-Laws change and notices will be sent for voting at the next Stated Meeting in July.

Most Worshipful Grand Master, Past Grand Masters, Distinguished and Honored Guests, Grand Lodge members, Brethren All, good morning to all of you!

First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, MW Sir, for giving me the great honor and privilege to serve this Grand Jurisdiction.

I would also like to thank all the Wardens who participated in the Wardens Competition.

Brethren, let me state that for our fraternity to grow, we need to be an organization that members want and not just an organization that wants members.

I am a firm believer of the Standard Works and Lectures of this Grand Jurisdiction. But believe it or not, there are Masons today who would look to doing away with certain parts of the ritual. Whether the intentions are right or wrong, I do believe in one thing only - we need to strive to safeguard the Standard Work because the one thing that sets us apart from most, if not all of the other organizations, is our ritual and our tradition, both written and oral.

Of all the aspects of Freemasonry, there is none more important than the ritual. Within the words of the Masonic ritual are found the tenets of our ancient institution. The fraternity's true goals for its members become evident through ritual study and degree practice and it provides direction to all Masons of how best we can work and how best we can agree. However, the ritual work remains as one of the most neglected of all Masonic duties. Its standing within the fraternity should impress upon its members, both old and young, their responsibility to practice, ensuring more than a simple working knowledge of what the ritual work teaches.

The ritual must never be submissive to money or membership numbers. The ritual must never be changed in order to accommodate individuals who will never try to understand or appreciate its philosophical intent. The Masonic ritual must be probed and understood from a psychological and historical point of view in order to understand or appreciate its vast dimensions and great depths.

During my travels, I have learned that different lodges have traditions and sometimes, certain parts of the rituals are also different. That’s because many brothers were, in fact, raised in different jurisdictions. Once in a while, you will hear them use the Ohio work, California, New York, Missouri and even Philippine Standard Work, to name a few. But are they exempted?

Section 6.01 of the Washington Masonic Code states that the master copy of the combined Esoteric Work, together with the Monitorial Work and amendments adopted by the Grand Lodge, shall be the Standard Work of this Grand Jurisdiction. It further states that every Lodge shall practice that Standard Work and no other.

The Grand Lodge encourages every member of this jurisdiction to learn and study the Standard Work. The primary intent of committing it to memory is to create a culture for the lodges to be self sufficient. The Master of the Lodge should promote the study of the Standard Work to all the members of this lodge as a means to strengthen his lodge. It should be encouraged among the newer members not only to prepare them for future officers’ positions but to help create a sense of purpose and a real feeling that they are needed by the lodge. It could also help them begin the fulfilling journey into ritual work that so many of us enjoy. By generating a positive atmosphere among the newer members, this will increase their desire to become more active in the lodge and the possibility of attracting prospective members.

My brothers, in our individual lives, it is appropriate that from time to time we should mentally distance ourselves from some of the well-established habits and everyday routine of our lives and take an objective view of some of these routines. Sometimes, we may find that one or more of the things that we do could possibly enhance our lives if they were done a little differently. This is true of the role the ritual plays in the life of a Freemason.

Before we were admitted into Masonry, we did not know what was meant by the term "ritual". If you were fortunate during your initiation, you would not have received the impression that those performing the ceremony were, in fact, reciting something which was written down in a book. During the ceremony, after you were in a position to look around you and observe the Worshipful Master speaking to you in a friendly and fluent way, your attention would have become more focused on the meaning of what the speaker was saying and you would not have got the impression that he was reading something to you from a book.
Unfortunately, this is the ideal which very few lodges can perfectly accomplish.

Before we consider the role of the Ritual in Freemasonry, let us think about what we are setting out to do when we initiate a candidate into our fraternity. We have satisfied ourselves that he is a suitable person to be admitted as a member of our ancient fraternity, and we want to impress upon him the honor we have conferred on him by accepting him into our midst, and to clearly impart to him the meaning of our ceremony, and what is required of him as a member of our fraternity. It is paramount that the candidate fully understands everything he is being told during the ceremony.

This is where our ritual comes in. It is the Masonic road map which enables the driver to transport the passenger from somewhere to some other place of which the passenger has only heard but he does not really know where he is going. However, he has been assured that the place to which he is going is a good place to be. Therefore, it is essential that the driver not only knows how to read the map, but can explain to the passenger, things that happen along the way during his journey. Nothing should be allowed to happen which would make the passenger apprehensive or uncomfortable which would tend to lessen his appreciation and understanding of those things to which he is exposed during his journey.

So in order to achieve the objective of making sure that our candidates fully understand and appreciate the ceremonies, it is essential that we impart the meaning of what is contained in the words of our ritual. It is imperative that before we deliver any part of the ritual in an actual ceremony, we learn exactly what the words are intended to convey. The importance of the ritual is paramount.

It has been said that “the ritual is fundamental to the Craft, and its preservation in its purest form is the life blood of our Fraternity”. Certainly, we all have the tendencies to forget that related to all the things that we do are those moral principles which illuminate and stimulate the Masonic vision. We pride ourselves of our historical Masonic heroes and celebrities. We pat each other on the back and tell ourselves how well we are doing. We give ourselves titles that don’t mean anything to all our non-Masonic friends and even the members of our family and yet, there are times, when the light of Freemasonry remains hidden within the walls of our Lodges.

Conrad Hahn, the Masonic poet and scholar once observed the “the lack of educational work in the average lodge is the principal reason for the lack of interest and the consequence of poor attendance in Masonry”.

My brothers, one of the primary function of a Lodge is to train and educate its members on the basic truths which its rituals and its ceremonies are designed to inculcate; to develop its members as benevolent men; to cultivate social virtues and to propagate the knowledge of the art. And if many of us find ourselves unconcerned with proper Masonic education and development, our membership will decline significantly, unqualified members will assume roles of leadership and will make an attempt to govern the lodge only to have the lodge in an even worse condition than when they had inherited it. It’s been this way in many lodges and in many jurisdictions. Some lodges consolidate, other lodges just simply surrender their Charter, and many lodges cannot even open and close the lodge without the help of the visiting brethren.

My brothers, we can all agree that Freemasonry is a splendid fraternity; that it is steeped in tradition; that it numbers many great men of the past and present as its members; that it has a beautiful ritual; and that it is, indeed, a great honor to be a Freemason. As such, we must constantly remember that in every moment of our life – in public, at work, at pleasure, with our families, even when we are alone – we are Freemasons.

Each of us has a responsibility to abide by the obligations we promised before the Altar of Freemasonry. Each of us has a responsibility to steer our fraternity into the future. We must, therefore, foster and promote the same brotherhood that we admire and raise the standard of our fraternity. Only then can we fulfill the promise of Freemasonry. Thank you all and God bless the Masons!

We are very sorry to have to report this sad news. Brother Hal Moulton, sitting Senior Warden of Tenino Lodge #86 passed away Sunday, May 29th. He was a pleasure to know, a wonderful cook, and a darn good Senior Warden. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Hal's family. Memorial services will be posted as they are made known.

JGW Candidates Event - update

The candidates for 2011-2012 Grand Lodge Junior Warden, were in a special forum today at Centralia Lodge. Arranged by WM Ken Keesler as a chance for local Master Masons to get to know them prior to the election in June at the 2011 Annual Communication (to held again at Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound.)

This was the first time I had attended an event like this. It appeared to be a huge success. The 20 attendees had opportunity to ask questions of the Candidates. Their thoughtful answers helped reveal, to the discerning eye, the characters of the three men.

The Passing of Dick Nyholm

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of VWB Dick Nyholm, Centralia #63 landmark Mason, on Thursday, April 21, 2011.

WB Rich Lathrope informs us: "For a period he performed every Installation in the Lewis County area, word perfect with a gravitas surrounded by a quick wit and sense of humor."

There will be a memorial service for VWB Dick Nyholm next Saturday , April 30^th at 1:00 p.m. at Centralia Lodge. Bring your apron and dress formally as for Lodge.

Special Meeting with GL Junior Warden Candidates

There will be a special meeting at the Centralia Lodge on Saturday, April 23, 2011 for the Grand Lodge Junior Warden Candidates to talk and receive questions. There are three and one of them will be elected in June at the Annual Grand Lodge Communication (June 9-11) at Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound.

As you may know, once elected to GJW, four years later he is most certainly to be Grand Master. This will be a wonderful opportunity for you to come and meet them. Get to know the person who will be the once & future GM.

The three candidates are VWB Jim Mendoza, VWB Coe Tug Morgan, and VWB Bruce Vesper.

Start time is 11am, with light lunch. End time is 2pm. Cost is just $5.

Tenino Lodge “soft’ opening, Corned beef & Cabbage

Okay, so the Corned Beef and Cabbage was a couple of weeks late. Nevertheless, it was worth it. And it was the only chance to see the entire downstairs of the newly remodeled Tenino Lodge Building. Upstairs, we were introduced to the new, improved lodge room. Am I the only one that misses the old dungeon-like smell of the old lodge? John Shull solved that problem for my birthday. Anyway, RWB Dave Owen, Grand Secretary, presented VWB Jack C. Parker with his 60-year pin for a modest, but not small, crowd. A very honorable distinction for a very distinguished Mason. WB Tim Lund also gave previews of ideas for using neon lighting for the walls and ceiling of the lodge room. I look forward to seeing what that’ll look like! Overall, it’s great to be back home.

DeMolay Grand Convention, Great Wolf Lodge

WB Jerry Vaudrin has a young man who was interested in joining DeMolay, and he brought me along to watch. Boy, was that a wakeup call! It’s the exact opposite of our Annual Communication of Grand Lodge! Jerry had to shut off his hearing aids, and I wished I brought earplugs, but I must say it was fun. Brian Johnson was also in attendance, as well as the Centralia Assembly of the Rainbow Girls. Oh yeah, so were WB’s Jon Anderson and Don Bulloch, whose sons were involved in the ceremony, as the state DeMolay did great work when the time was for it. But it was worth the trip, as the young man is now ready to join.

After the usual stated communication, WB Ed Bennett, Worshipful Master of Olympia Lodge #1, gave us a lecture on the Civil War generals that were active Masons in the Washington Territory, most notably Olympia lodge. As are most presentations, this one was well received, and many hope to see more of them.

Chehalis Lodge Flag presentation, FCM Degree

Chehalis Lodge conferred a Fellowcraft Degree on their newest brother, after which 3 members of Harmony Lodge #18 demonstrated the 13 folds of the American Flag, and explained the meanings of the 13 folds. This is usually seen at veteran’s funerals, so it is nice to see the ceremony under more favorable circumstances. I performed the Middle Chamber Lecture, which is notable only due to the unfortunate passing of the Worshipful Master of Robert Morris Lodge, WB Bill Lowe, who was scheduled to perform the lecture.

Tenino Bikes 4 Books, Parkside Elementary

I don’t think I included a Bikes 4 Books in this blog, but here is one, even though I was at work and didn’t attend. This time, Bro. Steve Livingston, Senior Warden, drew the winners. It’s nice that almost all of the lodges in our district are involved with this very worthwhile program. The kids love it.

Traveling Trowel from Winlock to Tenino

After spending at least 10 years hidden in a back room of Winlock Lodge, a member finally found the Traveling Trowel. WB Mark Hanshaw brought 2 brothers with him and presented it to Tenino Lodge. Derek Lathrope, the Senior Deacon, figured he’d quickly get rid of it by bringing 3 Tenino members to Olympia #1 the following night. As of Grand Lodge, he still had the Trowel. On another note, WB Rich Lathrope turned 66, and received a cake. Nice cheesecake, and boy, was it good!

Mother’s day breakfast in Centralia

A couple of Lodges had a Mother’s Day breakfast, but I attended the Centralia one to help a little. This was actually a practice for the Grand Lodge breakfast to be held in June. While attendance was just enough to stay afloat financially, the big key was the lessons learned logistically. This paid off in June.

Centralia Lodge Costume 2nd degree

Upon taking the Grand Master’s advice and inquiring from certain Seattle brothers, I brought one of the ideas to Centralia Lodge in performing the Middle Chamber Lecture in a costume. While most of the brothers said I picked too drab of a costume, the idea was well received by young and old alike. I hope that this will start a trend in the district.

A certain bro. Chandler received the Master Mason degree in Morton Lodge, and this will likely be the final degree this lodge performs before merging with Robert Morris Lodge. The 2 dozen in attendance was a nice showing, however.

On the other hand, Tenino Lodge performed their first Master Mason degree in their newly remodeled building, on a Bro. Jay von Minden. It was the first time I’ve seen a Drama in the building with that high of a ceiling in about 14 years.

Chehalis Lodge Pin ceremony

MWB Gale Kenney attended this meeting, where 10 Masons received pins for membership spanning 25 to 60 years. Some were pinned by their wives, one by his Granddaughter and great-granddaughter, the others by the Grand Master. IN addition, MWB Kenney also presented a Hiram Award to WB Eric Melin, who certainly deserved it for all of the work he’s done for Chehalis Lodge. Memorial Day grave markers in Centralia

This is a tradition that goes back at least 60 years. Centralia Lodge puts out grave markers for the Masons interred at 3 cemeteries in the area. While 1 or 2 get negative reaction from family members, the thank-you’s greatly outnumber them. Many members find it fun, kind of a treasure hunt in a way. Plans are to clean and update some of the more worn headstones.

Grand Lodge Annual Communication at the Great Wolf Lodge, Grand Mound

As the home Deputy, you get special benefits. For example, I had the privilege of escorting the Mayor of Centralia, Harlan Thompson, as the first dignitary. I also received a few petitions from brothers, and gave them to members of lodges that were closest to the petitioner’s residence. Living so close, I also “Brown Bagged” it and ate at home. (Yeah, I’m rubbin’ it in!) In addition, as a member of the Grand Lodge Team, I found it quite fun. It’s a great atmosphere, and I encourage any Mason in our district to attend next year’s, which will again be here in Grand Mound.

This was a project started almost a year ago, and after much planning, it sounds like it was a success. I’ve heard that many Masons are wondering if the Centralia area Masons plan to repeat the breakfasts next year. Good for you guys!

Grand Master’s installation

Our new Grand Master is MWB Godofredo Santy Lascano, the 3rd Filipino to be installed as Grand Master in an American Jurisdiction. MWB Santy’s theme is “Working Together.” It will be fun working together with you in our district for the good of Masonry. In addition to RWB’s Mike Sanders and Dean Heineman moving up in their respective positions, we welcome RWB Jerald “Cuddles” Lingle of Shelton as our new Junior Grand Warden.

Chehalis Lodge #28 Strawberry Feed

I regard this meeting as the last regular meeting in our district until the fall, even though half of the lodges continue to meet throughout the year. It’s still my sendoff for summer. This year it was well attended. And yes, you still have your choice of “leaded” or “Unleaded”, depending on how much sugar you can handle. This year they called it “fake Sugar!”

Fourth of July parade

While there weren’t that many Masons in the parade, those that did show up had fun. Even Brian enjoyed himself, despite wearing that heavy armor throughout the parade route. The Lewis County Shrine Club’s 1924 Model T is a big hit with the kids and adults alike. The Rainbow Girls were in front, and Ian and Leeroy were carrying the CHiPs banner behind. Brian and I did crowd control, to allow the Shriners to do their stunts. Half of the parade found me holding the T’s steering wheel!

This wouldn’t be in the blog if it weren’t involving 3 Masons in the area. However, Bro. Brian Johnson and his daughter, WB Lauren Jessup and I had been training for this since early spring. Unfortunately, the young lady who talked us into doing it had a bad spill on July 5th, breaking her right arm, so only 3 did it instead of the intended 4. Check the Centralia Lodge website for the numerous pictures I took during this ride. Included are a handful of pictures of us in front of various Masonic Lodges on the route. It looks like more Centralia Lodge members are interested in joining Brian and Lauren for the 2011 STP. Have I made a commitment? Are you kidding? It’s too early. We’ll see.

The first Mid-summer installation in District #17 that I can remember. Oops, the first one period, as they weren’t allowed until a few years ago. Now WB Ken Keesler is now Worshipful Master of Centralia Lodge, and he was installed in fine form in front of a nice crowd. Again, Check Centralia’s Website for pictures of this ceremony, as 90 pictures were posted. We were also treated to a great dinner downstairs of ribs, chicken, rolls and corn on the cob.

Due to damage repair to Tenino’s building, the charter was temporarily moved to the home of Centralia Lodge #63. It sure felt weird, as a 2 time Past Master of Tenino Lodge, to be holding a meeting in another lodge. But the meeting was well attended.

Clifton Moog’s 70 year pin

This is a first for me. I was notified by Des Moines Lodge #245 that one of their members was due a 65 year pin, and that he lived in Centralia. Instead of just going over there and giving him the pin myself, I asked the local brethren if they could do the pin ceremony for him. While I secured a date for that, the secretary of Des Moines lodge found that this brother is actually due a 70 year pin! With a nice turnout, Bro. Clifton Moog, at 96 years young, was given the length of service ceremony, and pinned by his granddaughter. Also in attendance, and living in the same facility with Moog, is WB Clervill Roberson, Past Master of Robert Morris Lodge #97 in 1971.

This was actually my official visit to Chehalis Lodge, but the primary focus of the meeting was a first degree. It was well attended, and WB Steve Carmick gave the EAM lecture for the first time. Afterwards, we sang happy birthday to the newest member of Chehalis Lodge!

Tenino Masonic building in remodeling

The Tenino Masonic Building Association President gave me a couple of tours of the building while it was being redone. I was amazed at how the lodge looks when it’s gutted! And while it was apart, the brethren did do a little remodeling in the East. Being the Master of that lodge only months before, it was especially surprising for me how unrecognizable the room is.

The key to this meeting was the incredible attendance, and the topics covered. The members of Tenino lodge discussed details on ceiling height, wall color, floor style, etc. WB Jerry Vaudrin of Centralia lodge discussed the upcoming Grand Lodge Breakfasts, and Bro. Hank Leindecker provided interesting information concerning the color of a Masonic Apron in Washington.

Robert Burns night

Between the Scotch and the Haggis, I personally found it a forgettable night; however, everyone else found it a fun night for exactly the same reason. WB Tim Lund brought in the Haggis, piped in by VWB Gary Norton. WB Lund also read the “Ode to a Haggis”, and cut it, ready to eat. Bro. Derek Lathrope did a fabulous job on not only the haggis, but also the neaps and tatties. We were also treated to a video on Scottish subjects, and a couple of Scottish tunes played on violin by Bro. Tony Inglett, and sang by Bro. Nathan Black. A regular meeting followed, ending by a personal vow by me to avoid scotch at all costs.

Centralia Lodge 3rd degree in Costume

I’ve been looking for this for years, but now we have the manpower and the interest to see it come to fruition. Finally, Centralia Lodge was able to perform a Master Mason degree in costume. With the cooperation of Centralia Chapter #44, Royal Arch Masons, costumes were provided, with some improvisation, and bro. Jim Knutson became the newest enrolled member of Centralia Lodge. With more Apprentices on the wings, this is the first of more to come!

District 16-17 meeting, Gavel Lodge #48

This is the first time District #17 has had a district meeting in another district in a long time, at least 15 years. However, attendance was still impressive. While the recipient of District #17’s Grand Master’s Achievement award was at work and unable to show, District #16’s, a member of Occident Lodge in Ilwaco, was present. Five lodges in our district received Pillars of Progress awards, and hopefully, all of our lodges will make progress and receive one next time. Also notable was the Q&A upstairs with the Grand Master and his colleagues.

Removing Centralia Lodge’s light globes

This was an interesting event, personally as well as Masonically. The 6 globes that adorn the Centralia Masonic Building were filthy and worn, and one of them was burnt out. The Temple Board Treasurer, Ken Keesler, rented a scissor lift to go up and remove them, but we quickly found out how difficult and potentially dangerous it could be. We called the Junior Warden, Brian Johnson, to assist, and sure enough, he removed all 6, in two trips. As of right now, their redoing is pending.

For their final member into their ranks, Morton decided to have Robert Morris Lodge confer the FCM degree by Courtesy. Most notable is WB Bill Lowe giving the Middle Chamber Lecture. 17 attended this meeting, a great turnout for East County.

Richard Nyholm receives Grand Master’s achievement award

Since VWB Dick Nyholm was unable to attend the District Meeting, I presented him with the GMA award and pin at Centralia’s next stated meeting. VWB Nyholm was DDGM back in 1976-1978, and had installed several of the local lodges during at least 3 decades. He also served as the Centralia Temple Board treasurer for 25 years, retiring this year. He also performed the Middle Chamber lecture for many lodges, and played prominent roles in other degrees. Many were surprised that VWB Nyholm didn’t already have this award!

Olympia Lodge #1 Closed Installation December 4^th, 2009

There were 52 brothers in attendance for this installation, which is the best attended closed installation I’ve ever attended, and everything ran quite smooth. Apparently I was early in my leaving the refreshment afterwards, as the building wasn’t cleared out until 3:00 in the morning, which is fine, because I work on Saturdays. I am honored to install this lodge, and am very happy that this lodge has a fine crew of officers.

Morton Lodge #209 final installation December 9^th, 2009

While it is an honor to install any Masonic Lodge, and I am fortunate enough to have installed this lodge once before, this is the last one, and while it is an honor to be the last Mason to install a lodge, it’s tough to see a lodge fold. This was also their next-to-last meeting in their current building. There were about 20 in attendance, and I thank all who took the time and effort to attend.

Since this meeting was concurrent with the Olympia Bethel of Job’s Daughters’ installation, attendance was lower than usual, but still not bad! WB Bill Lowe replaces WB Glen Aldrich as Worshipful Master, for a 2 year term.

Tenino Lodge #86 Installation of Officers, December 17, 2009

Well, I wasn’t quite done being Worshipful Master of Tenino Lodge, as we had to ballot on Derek Lathrope before the installation ceremony started. So, we started the ceremony at 7:45. But before that, which is key to note, there was a nice dinner prepared downstairs by Tim’s family, and served by members of the Tenino class of 2012 (Hey, that’s a ways in the future, isn’t it?). But more was up. The previous meeting, Brother Lund informed us that he’d like us all to wear kilts if we have them, and he had some to let us borrow if we wished. So, after discussion, Bro. Ken Keesler decided to comply with Tim’s request, with dresses. 7 of them. I didn’t think he was going to do it, but sure enough, as the dinner was winding down, 7 of us headed into the dining room, and we informed Tim that since we couldn’t find kilts, these had to do. Tim had a fun comment, and everyone whipped out their cameras. Ironically, 7 people wore true kilts as well. Oh, yeah, that’s right. There was an installation. With me as the Master, Rich Lathrope as Secretary, Bruce York as the Marshal, and Brian Morgan as Chaplain, not only it was in fine form, but in fun form as well. And after I got thrown into the Tyler’s room, (Okay, I ran to the Tyler’s room,) the fun continued, with Tim’s wife, Debbie, picking up where we left off. Also in attendance were Tim’s sister, brother, niece and father, as well as his son and daughter. Wow, that was a great Installation.

Olympia #1 Official Visit of the DDGM, December 18, 2009

This was the second of 8 OV’s. But the Official Visit wasn’t the part to mention here. 2 Officers weren’t installed yet, but at the same time, 5 members who were 1^st and 2^nd degree Masons were also in attendance. So Ed Bennett opened a lodge of Master Masons, the officers were installed, and lodge was called down to the first degree to let the new members in. That was fun to watch. After I closed the lodge, some of the members joked that I was the first District Deputy to close Olympia Lodge #3!

Centralia Lodge #63 stated meeting, December 21^st, 2009

For this meeting, Worshipful Master Jerry Vaudrin presented 3 of 4 Past Masters with a Hiram Award for their service to Centralia Lodge. Lauren Jessup, who has been secretary and Temple Board president, Dick Nyholm, who has been Temple Board treasurer and Lodge ritualist for many years, and Richard Ezekiel, who has quietly been lodge treasurer since 2003, and also presided over numerous funerals and was the building superintendent during the past decade. The 4^th brother, WB Jim Simon, couldn’t attend, so Jerry and I went to his house the next day to present it to him. Jim has worked tirelessly to run numerous Masonic endeavors in Centralia, some of them single-handedly.

Tenino Lodge “2010 lift off”, January 7^th, 2010

As stated in the caption, this was intended to be the starting point for a new year for Tenino lodge. Well, we have a new problem. There was an explosion in the oil furnace and the exhaust duct came off, so the whole building became the furnace’s chimney. After a visit by the fire department, WB Tim Lund did hold a meeting downstairs, in a table lodge layout. However, everything in the building smells like heating oil, and everything is covered by a layer of soot. It looks like Tenino won’t be able to meet in their temple for 3 months or so while the problem is fixed. This will make 2 years in a row that Tenino Lodge’s building has been plagued by serious damage.

Harmony Lodge #18 Installation of Officers, January 9^th, 2010

This is the final installation for District #17 this season, and it went well. WB Kurt Schmid and his officers were installed by an installing team consisting of most of the immediate Past Masters, as well as Bro. Jon Lenander. I got to kick back and watch, for the first time this year. The meeting was concluded by the Closing Cross and the Arch of Steel, accompanied by VWB Bruce York’s Bagpipes. It was well attended and very professional.

This district’s installation season spanned 5 months, and among the 8 installations, 2 featured the Closing Cross by the Job’s Daughters, and 4 featured the DeMolay’s Arch of Steel. 4 were closed, 4 were open. (Notice that all of the open installations had the DeMolay involved!) 5 were attended by more that 50 people, and all but one were attended by more people than the lodges are accustomed to. I have never seen this before, and it is very promising. Many old-timers tell me that this is the way it used to be everywhere, so we might be heading back to the good-old-days.

Morton Lodge Official Visit, January 13^th, 2010

This was indeed a sad meeting. Roughly 2 dozen Masons showed up for the final meeting to be held in the Morton’s Masonic building. However, I had the honor of introducing my cohort in District #16, VWB Norm Greenly. I also presented 4 members of Morton Lodge with their Length of service awards, including 1 25 year, 1 50 year, and 2 55 year pins. The older members gave recollections of when the lodge building was built, and their years in the East. Then the members closed their lodge. Next month, they will meet in Silver Creek. Manley, Brian and I stopped in Chehalis Lodge to have a second refreshment and talk of the meeting.

Installation Update

3 down, 5 to go. And 1 in another district.

The next Installation will be on Friday, December 4th, at Olympia Lodge #1. This is their first stated meeting in December, and the installation will be closed. There will be a 6:30 Dinner preceding it. WB Ed Bennett will be installed as Worshipful Master, WB Ed has presided over Tenino Lodge in 2006, and did a fine job.
The Following week, on Wednesday, December 9th, at 7:00, will be Morton Lodge #209’s installation. It will also be closed. More importantly, there’s a distinct possibility that this will be their final installation! I would like to see a good turnout to this event.
Little Falls Lodge #176 will install Bro. Wayne Brown on Friday, December 11th, at 7:30. It will be an open installation, with Kelso’s installation team performing the ceremony. Remember that Bro. Wayne has visited and assisted the bulk of the lodges in our district, and we should show our support.
And then the day after that, at 8:00, will be Robert Morris’s installation. It also will be closed.
Tenino Lodge will be holding its open installation on Thursday, December 17th, with a 6:30 dinner and a 7:30 installation. This is a momentous occasion for me, as I’m installing my successor, Bro. Tim Lund, into the East, and will be installed as one of the Stewards, along with WB John Shull. Oops, that got changed, as is the will and pleasure of the incoming Master, I will be the Tyler. WB Doug Mathers will be the Junior Steward.
It looks like Bro. Kurt Schmid will be installed as Master of Harmony Lodge #18 on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at 1:00 PM. That will conclude the installations for District #17.

Don’t’ be surprised that I keep mentioning my lodge in this blog. It’s not too often that a presiding Master has the Senior Deacon run a meeting. The Senior Warden’s run 2, and the Junior Warden conferred a degree and was okay with letting Hal Moulton have a go in the East. Hal found it to be a new experience, and his father, WB Art Moulton, was most proud of seeing his son wear the Top Hat and conduct his Lodge’s business.

November 11th, 2009 Chehalis Lodge #28 Installation of Officers

This will be VWB Ernest Goad’s 4th time in the East, and all in different lodges. Brother Goad has presided over Yakima #24, Mount Adams #227 (also in Yakima), and John Paul Jones #271 in Gig Harbor. VWB Goad also was District #20’s Deputy, around 15-20 years ago. So, it should be expected that he’ll have a well planned and well attended installation ceremony. Since I was to Install Ernie, the expectations for me were high as well. I will tell you that this was one of the most impressive installations I’ve seen. The Job’s daughters did their closing cross, and the DeMolay did the Arch of Steel. A few rainbow girls were present to escort the officers in as well. And according to several accounts, between 80 and 90 people were in the building. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a little friendly competition between bros. Vaudrin and Goad to see whose installation would be better attended. I think Ernie won, but I also think we have 2 winners here!

November 5th, 2009 Tenino Lodge Outage meeting

The windstorms are coming, and sure enough, we show up to a building with no lights on. The Washington Masonic Code now allows a presiding Master to cancel a meeting due to inclement weather, and this would probably qualify, as a windstorm induced the outage, but remember, we’re talking Tenino Lodge here, and remember who the Master is. Yep, we held a meeting. In the dark. Okay, there was power across the street, and the streetlights shone a little into our room, but our chaplain still borrowed my flashlight to read the prayer. Power was restored around 40 minutes into the meeting, and we closed shortly afterwards. I’m telling you, Tenino Lodge has had an incredible year.

Again, the attendance wasn’t the greatest, and the ritual involved was quite creative, but we got to see a preview of VWB Ernest Goad’s installation work. WB Mark Hanshaw is now the Master, and while he is a “rerun”, it’s been around 15 years or so since the last time, so hey, he’s fresh as far as I’m concerned, as I’ve been out of high school for only 17 years. Remember, this lodge meets on the first Saturday of each month, at 10:00 AM.

Those ladies got a treat in the Worshipful Master, Jerry Vaudrin, who knows his way around the ladies, and he certainly did so with the newest widow, who received a widow’s pin from WB Vaudrin.

We had election of Officers, and Bro. Tim Lund was elected to be Worshipful Master of Tenino Lodge for the year 2010. His installation will be open, on December 17th with a 6:30 dinner and a 7:30 ceremony. Also introduced to Tenino Lodge was a new Hoover Vacuum cleaner. It proved to be quite popular, and the brethren even named it R2D2, after the famous Star Wars droid. I even had 2 secretaries for the meeting.

The Special meeting, October 16th

Due to one of the brothers’ imminent deployment overseas, time was short, and harmony Lodge needed to get degrees done fast. Tenino lodge stepped in and opened a special meeting to confer Courtesy degrees on 2 fellowcraft Masons of Harmony Lodge. WB Rich Lathrope, who set up the degree, wanted to get as many lodges involved as possible, and he did not disappoint. At least 5 lodges were involved. Most noteworthy was the drama, where many brethren were introduced to the excellent ritual work of VWB Ernest Goad, WB Steve Carmick and Bro. Wayne Brown. I hope that the principal officers of all of the lodges involved catch on to this idea and see the different ways that we can perform degree work on our candidates.

It’s not too often that a Presiding Master gets appointed District Deputy at the same time. After checking the Grand Lodge proceedings from the past, it appears that I’m the first to be both a Worshipful Master and a District Deputy at the same time in District #17 since at least World War II. It may seem like a landmark distinction, but I assure you, it’s that many more chain saws to juggle! Here’s an example. This night, to mark the combination Master-Deputy distinction, I decided to maintain the scheduled Official Visit I had planned last Fall for my Year as Master, and Officially visit myself, with a move-up night to have the Senior Warden run the meeting. But, we’ve balloted on a new member to receive the degrees, and I scheduled it for the first meeting in October, this night. Wow. After the degree was conferred, by the Junior Warden, thus keeping all 3 Principal Officers busy, we had in attendance 4 Entered Apprentices, all from different Lodges! And since the hour was late, I kept the length of my speech to a whopping… well, it was short. Break out the stopwatch. But it was a memorable night.

Yes, you read it right. Centralia Lodge installed their officers…in September! The meeting was very well attended, with over 70 people present to watch VWB Dick Nyholm install bro. Jerry Vaudrin into the East. The ceremony also included the DeMolay’s Arch of Steel, and escorting by the Rainbow Girls. Also notable, and very important, is that none of the Wardens, Deacons or Stewards are Past Masters! This shows promise for this growing lodge.

September 3, 2009 Tenino Lodge #86 Pig Roast

Oh, baby! This is the big day for Tenino Lodge! It took much of the year, and all Summer, to reach this point. There was tons of hard work involved by many people. It was a true Team effort. And it all boiled down to this day. This meeting featured an 80 pound pig, roasted on a spit. Upstairs, those who attended were invited to watch Bethel #51, International Order of Job’s Daughters, perform a ceremony recognizing the different Masonic Bodies, and, of Course, our Most Worshipful Grand Master, MWB Gale Kenney, who gave a speech that was enjoyed by all. Also, Bro. Tim Lund, Senior Warden, announced that a board would be made, a small replica of the Tiled Floor of Tenino Lodge, for which people could buy a square for $15 a square that day, and $20 thereafter. This proved to be quite popular, and to this day, squares are still available. Check Tenino Lodge’s website for more details. Some of the brothers think this’ll be the climax of the year, and it’ll be “downhill” from here. We’ll see, the year’s not done quite yet, my brothers.

Usually, a scheduled visit by a Grand Master is a formal, solemn affair. Not this time. WB Ivan Isaacson invited the Grand Master to attend an informal Barbecue. There was a chili cook-off, which was won by Russ and Brenda Wilhite, and for the meeting indoors, WB Rod Mason was installed as the Grand Sword Bearer, VWB Clayton La Vigne was presented his certificate of Proficiency in the Fellowcraft degree, and several Brothers were presented with years of service awards. It goes to show you that Masonry is not necessarily completely Dark in the Summer.

As is their annual tradition, Chehalis Lodge has a strawberry feed on the 4^th Wednesday of every June, I generally regard it as the last meeting until fall, Lodges that don’t go dark notwithstanding. Attendance was great, and as a special treat, when lodge convened upstairs, we were greeted by one of the first of MWB Gale Kenney’s GMDI’s (Grand Master Drop-in). A fun time was had by all.

Many of us in Blue Lodge may not be aware that V.W.B. Charles was a Past Grand Worthy Patron of Eastern Star, as well as a Charter member of the Washington State Fryer Commission.

When a Master is installed he swears to “Cheerfully conform to the laws of the country...” A large number of us have been derelict in this by failing to secure a Food Handler’s Permit when we prepare and serve food in Lodge or at public events. Here, thanks to the diligence of the Rainbow Girls, is our opportunity to rectify this oversight. At 7:00 p.m. the Thurston County Health Department has kindly agreed to provide a class to whomever wants to turn up at the Olympia Masonic Center in Tumwater. At the end of the class you can take the test and for a fee of $10 receive your Food Handler’s Permit.

NY Life is staging a golf tournament and has asked various community groups to assist in making the event more than just another golf outing. The Thurston County Childhood Identification Committee has responded by providing a CHIPS booth. Starts at 10:00 a.m. and goes until 3:00 p.m., the more Masonic people who turn up the better, but ladies and young people are especially valuable because the youngsters getting ID’d tend to respond better to them. With more than half a million children caught up in U.S. courts and the child welfare system as a result of a less-than-perfect living situation at home, it’s easy to see that not all of them will get proper representation.

People like Bill Butler are trying to fix that. The nearly 79-year-old volunteer guardian ad litem has been the voice of these children for more than 14 years, serving about 80 juveniles in his time.

His duties, like all other volunteers in his field, are to represent children in court, research relatives and parents, gather evidence for the case and provide a written recommendation that is weighed heavily in a judge’s decision on a child’s future home.

“When it’s a success, it’s a great feeling,” Butler said. “I recently met a young lady I represented in the late ’90s, who is now a married woman with three children, and she’s doing very well.”

The volunteers, also called Court-Appointed Special Advocates, are assigned to a few children and their cases at a time. They’re selected by a board comprised of a judge, the head of the CASA program, and various members of the community, Butler said.

The big difference between those volunteers and attorney guardians ad litem is their pay, Butler said. The attorneys are in contract with the juvenile court system, while volunteers are appointed cases through separate programs.

He learned about the job through an ad in The Chronicle. Being former military and having the ability to work with children in the past, he said he is “not unfamiliar with the law” and felt ready to take his experience to the courtroom level.

When he started in 1995, there were maybe four or five volunteers alongside him in Lewis County. Now, with the help of former Judge David Draper, the program is a bustling volunteer service with more than 45 guardians ad litem, said Tanya Phillips, GAL coordinator for the program.

Each volunteer can work with up to 18 cases if they’re willing to put in the hours, Butler said. Volunteers are urged to visit their cases on a week to week basis, to make sure they understand their cases and are comfortable in their living situations.

After a life of military service, traveling around the world, and 14 years working with children and their families, Butler decided it was time to call it quits. He was supposed to retire this year, but one of his longtime cases requested that he stay on to help her through the court system until she turned 18. He agreed, and will retire next year instead.

“It’s time to quit while I can still do this reasonably well,” he said, laughing. “It’s been a pleasure. There’s definitely a soft spot in my heart for the foster families and judges that keep this program going.”

Many of the local Masonic organizations chip in each Mother's Day and organize a splendiferous affair for your enjoyment and to honor the Mothers we know and love!

Attendance dropped from 140 to 100, but those numbers are both a little suspect; last year we counted plates and I always thought we had some double counting and this year we counted slips and I am not sure we got all of them back. I had planned on feeding 120 so there were a few sausages and eggs left over but less than one package of each – so we were close. The only reason for counting is so that we can order the right amount of food.

We were particularly fortunate this year because Doug McKay donated 14 dozen eggs. So please next time you go to any supermarket please ask for OVEREASY eggs. Doug says he does not have distribution anywhere in Western Washington – so if you actually want to buy some either take a trip to Vancouver BC where they are sold or ask Doug. Meanwhile, he says he would love to have distribution in the local supermarkets because most of his current sales are to military and institutional organizations.

I also buckled down and made some Cinnabon type buns. I did this when I figured out it cost $1 for a muffin at Costco.
